AMSportstours - Callum, Sean, Jack and Daniel in Sweden on their Erasmus+ placement

An active step to the workplace

Education is a fundamental part of staying active and encouraging a healthy and balanced diet. In recommendations set out by the World Health Organization, three age groups; 5–17, 18–64 and 65 and above should engage in moderate to high intensity aerobic physical activity weekly, in particular those aged 5 -17 should exercise daily. It is therefore important that we engage and support the sport coaches of the future.

AMsportstours recently completed their Erasmus+ 2014 project 'Sports Coaching Development – A step nearer to the workplace'. The project gave young people from local partner colleges the opportunity to immerse themselves in another culture whilst developing skills in their chosen vocation.

Participants and organisations

61 participants who were studying for their Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma (HND) in sports coaching with development, and professional golf studies were selected for two week placements. The two partner organisations, Athlete Sports Academy (Sweden) and Takeball (Spain), along with AMSportstours Limited were able to tailor each participant’s placement to suit the needs and requirements of their vocational courses.

Development

The placements engaged each participant to clearly plan their coaching sessions considering; the age and level, activity work space, equipment and time they had to work with their groups. This promoted good habits, preparing each session clearly and adapting to any unforeseen issues. Delivering coaching sessions abroad improved communication skills which encouraged the young coaches to find new ways to communicate. Using clear demonstrations, body language and use of voice along with guidance of coaching staff stimulated the creativity of the learners.

It has certainly fuelled my ambition to work abroad, and after visiting Sweden, it’s a real target of mine - James, AMsportstours Erasmus+ participant

The learning environment and hands on activities have allowed learners to experience working abroad developing their capacity to manage and deliver high quality coaching sessions. The facilities available such as PGA Catalunya for golf in Spain gave an insight into behind the scenes, watching coaches deliver sessions as well as the opportunity to participate in question and answer sessions with professional players and coaches.
